the South and the Bariba and Somba in the North. A number of traditional
African languages are spoken. However, the official language is
French.

24% are Muslim and more than 17% practice Vodun, also known as Voodoo.Â
The capital city is Porto Novo and the seat of the government is in
Cotonou where the international airport is located.
Like most West African nations there is a monument
to acknowledge the departure of enslaved Africans to the Americas, the
Gate of No Return, is located in Quidah. Cultural venues include
museums, national parks, and of course, the Lake Village of Ganvie where
houses are built on stilts in the water with a Water Market open for
business. A popular shopping location is the Dan Tokpa Market in Cotonou
that is open every four days. If you enjoy water sports, try canoeing or
motor boating on the Nakone Lagoon or sailing at the Yacht Club in
Cotonou.
When you work with a trained community-based
agency, it is important that you sit down and discuss your program and
costing before making your final decision.  Timing is key to the best
prices along with a realistic itinerary.
