Congresswoman Maxine Waters Fervently Expressed Her Commitment, as well as,  Consolidated Home Ownership Institute, West Angeles Community Development Corporation; and Their Sponsors to Home Ownership in the Community at the 2018 Annual Home Ownership Made Easy (H.O.M.E.) Fair.  By Lyric Armstrong
On Saturday, June 23, 2018, my Berkshire Hathaway HSCP team was proud to be a part of the Annual Home Ownership Made Easy (H.O.M.E.) Fair put together by Consolidated Home Ownership Institute in collaboration with West Angeles Community Development Corporation.  The event sponsors, BBVA Compass and One West Bank, supported Consolidated Board of Realtists, West Angeles Church C.D.C., myself and other vendors’ commitment to increase homeownership throughout the community.
Consequently, attendees were welcomed and greeted by Frances Young, C.B.R. President; Ashley Thomas, III, NAREB Young Realtist Division (YRD) President, C.B.R. Past President, Pedetta Higgins, West Angeles CDC Administrator; and, Stan Jackson, C.B.R. 1st Vice President.
Mark Alston, NAREB Chair, Public Affairs Committee vigorously prepared the audience for the passionate speech of Congresswoman Maxine Waters.  Whereas, in celebration of the National Home Ownership month, Congresswoman Maxine Waters was the keynote speaker at the H.O.M.E. Fair.  Congresswoman Waters expressed her commitment to legislation and regulation which would expand purchasing power for first time homebuyers; as well as, limit the reoccurrence of the housing crises of improper mortgage lending practices of the previous decade.  Notably, the 2008 housing crisis resulted in a major decline of homeownership for the community to 42%; the lowest rate since 1968 when the Fair Housing act was enacted.
Further, Congresswoman Waters in citing her commitment to resources of wealth building was quoted in Essence stating that, “[e]verybody deserves a good quality of life.  There is too great a divide between the haves and the have-nots…”  The vigor and resolve Congresswoman Waters expressed motivated the H.O.M.E. Fair attendees to remain committed to their goals; while each sponsor and vendor proudly supports their efforts to building their wealth through homeownership.
One lucky attendee won a brand new laptop; while many won other door prizes and giveaways.  However, everyone was bestowed with invaluable education regarding credit and homeownership.  Specifically, presenter Ashley Thomas, III, NAREB YRD President, C.B.R. Past President educated the attendees regarding student loans and the impact on housing.  Also, presenter Mark Alston, NAREB Chair, Public Affairs Committee reviewed the NAREB State of Housing in Black America (S.H.I.B.A.) Report.
