What A Super Super Bowl!

When I say ‘Super', you say ‘Bowl'! The country's most watched sporting event of the year is the championship final of the National Football League. The Indianapolis Colts met the Chicago Bears in Florida on Super Bowl Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens. The celebration continues as this year, history was made when Tony Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts became the first African-American coach to ever win at the Super Bowl. Now that's a Super Super Bowl. History had already been made in the world of the NFL as for the first time (and hopefully not the last) both teams' head coaches were African-Americans.

The game aired nationwide in the USA on CBS. The Super Bowl is annually the nation's highest-rated TV program. More than 141 million viewers watched last year's game in the U.S. Super Bowl XLI was broadcast to a potential worldwide audience of 1 billion in more than 230 countries and territories.

This year marks the first time Pepsi, which has been an NFL sponsor the past five seasons, has sponsored the Super Bowl halftime show. Innovative commercials also captivated audiences and are always a special treat for the faker football spectator. Although it was rated as one of the ‘least favorite' commercials, GoDaddy.com attracted more new customers and enjoyed record sales through its Super Bowl ad strategy this year.

I am sure that other football fans would agree that there have been some Super Bowl games that were a little low key. This was definitely not the case with this 2007 Super Bowl, which had so many fantastic plays and unpredictable turnovers, that not even pouring rain could dampen the intensity and excitement. Even the opening play was amazing. Chicago Bears rookie, Devin Hester, became the first Super Bowl player to return the opening kickoff for a score. The 92-yard dance against the opposite team for the first score of the game ignited the super start to the competition. That tenacity of the game continued until the end with the final score of Colts 29, Bears 17.

Yes, the Indianapolis Colts have possession of the Vince Lombardi trophy and will proudly wear their Super Bowl rings. But both coaches and teams come out winners. Coach Dungy and Chicago Bears coach, Lovie Smith are also friends and often described as strong but quiet, unassuming coaches of formidable teams. The accomplishments of these men both on and off the field has filled Americans with pride, a double dose of pride among African Americans.  Yes, they are both now part of history.

Image "The Lord gave me the opportunity, Lovie and I, and we're able to take advantage of it," said Dungy after the game. "But we're certainly not the best, certainly not the most qualified, and I know there are some other guys that could have done it, given the chance.  So, I just felt good that I was the first one to be able to do it and kind of represent those guys that paved the way for me." Dungy and his wife, Lauren, are the parents of five children, daughters Tiara and Jade, and sons, Eric and Jordan. Their 18-year-old son James Dungy was found dead in a Tampa-area apartment in December 2005. Dungy enters his fifth season as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts after he took the helm of the club on January 22, 2002. He had previously served six seasons with Tampa Bay.

Hurrah, this was a Super Bowl complete with a Super halftime show. Superstar Prince rocked the stage (shaped like his symbol when he was The Artist Formerly Known As Prince), coliseum and parties everywhere. The 48-year-old Prince is more than just one of the world's most popular and influential musicians. Prince is a favorite among all generations and is truly an international icon. He has sold nearly 100 million albums and is a member of The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has won six Grammy Awards (he's one of the leading nominees this year with five Grammy nominations) and five American Music Awards. He has one of the most recognizable and successful bodies of work of any musician, consisting of 20 Top 10 hits which include "Purple Rain," "Little Red Corvette," "1999," "Kiss," "When Doves Cry," "Cream," "Diamonds and Pearls" and countless others. There is no question that when it comes to his achievements, Prince has made his mark in several genres of music.  "Purple Rain" was a perfect selection to accommodate the downpour that defined the game.

The marching band of Florida A&M were superb with their performance with Prince.  This was certainly one of the best Super Bowl halftime shows ever.  Julian White, director of bands at FAMU, said he and other band officials are worked with the Don Mischer Production Company to ensure that the "Marching 100" was ready, once again, for primetime.  The world-famous band already has under its hat three Super Bowl appearances, a Welch's Grape Drink commercial, the French Bi-Centennial celebration in Paris, France and a live 2006 Grammy Awards performance with Kanye West and Jamie Foxx.

Armed Forces Network television broadcasts NFL games for free, which has a downside on Super Bowl Sunday (or, in Iraq, Monday). As usual, the regular network TV advertisements were pre-empted in favor of military public service announcements. On game night, the ads included messages of support for U.S. troops from Colts and Bears players, but the soldiers would probably have preferred to watch the Super Bowl ad blitz everyone sees in the US. In line with military regulations in Iraq, there was no alcohol. Instead of beer, the soldiers drank soft drinks and super-caffeinated energy drinks to keep them awake through the game's 6 a.m. conclusion.

For the seventh time, the fan vote has been included in the overall tally for the game's MVP. Colts quarterback, Peyton Manning was named MVP.  Manning was presented with the Pete Rozelle Trophy and The New Escalade. Cadillac is the official vehicle of Super Bowl XLI. "I don't want the pass," Manning said. "I want to be held accountable each year, and each year my goal is to be a better quarterback. In the Super Bowl, he completed 25 of 38 passes for 247 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

Jim Nantz and Phil Simms also were super commentators.  Both teams exhibited skill and experience that made watching Super Bowl XLI-a great football experience.
